Austrian firm submits cable car proposal system for Cebu City

Cebu City, Cebu – First was the proposal for a light rail transit (LRT) system. This was followedby a plan to to launch a bus rapid transit (BRT) mass transport system. Now, an Austrian company is proposing the establishment of a cable car system to help solve traffic congestion in major streets here.
Mayor Michael Rama said the City Council will hold an executive session with the Doppelmayr Garaventa Group to learn more about the latter’s proposal to set up a cable car system in the city’s mountain barangays as an alternative mode of transportation.
Doppelmayr is an Austrian company that manufactures chairlifts, cable cars, gondolas, surface tows for ski and amusement parks as well as urban people movers and material handling systems. To date, Doppelmayr has produced over 14,400 installations in 88 countries.
Norbert Federstein, Doppelmayr area manager for Asia-Pacific, said cable cars are environment-friendly and user-friendly, an alternative to the earlier proposed BRT and light railway transit system.
Still, even as he has yet to hear what the Doppelmayr group has to say, Rama does not seem too be keen on the idea, saying that cable cars may be more appropriate for recreation facilities rather than for mass transportation.
“We are not used to this kind of transportation and we know a lot of people are afraid of heights,” said Rama, who is known to support the plan for a bus rapid transport system for the city.
The cable car proposal of Doppelmayr came after the National Economic and Development Authority Board deferred approval of the city’s proposed P10-billion BRT mass transport system.
