SM Seaside City Cebu to open in November

Cebu City Philippines, In November this year, SM Seaside City, the fourth largest SM mall nationwide, will open.

This is according to Hans Sy, president of SM Prime Holdings Inc., who was in Cebu yesterday for the mall’s tenant preview held inside SM Seaside City at the South Road Properties.

“We are looking to open the mall by November,” Sy told reporters at the sidelines of the event. In its four-year construction period, the company has already spent P7.5 billion for the mall development.

The next six years will be more exciting, he said, as they are targeting to completely develop the entire 30-hectare complex.

Upon completion, the site will have a convention center, which is planned to be as big as the 24,000-square meter SMX Convention Center in Pasay, a hotel, and high-rise residential and office towers.

“The whole complex will cost P20 billion, but we have to raise our budget to P30 billion,” Sy said, citing the company’s confidence in their investments in Cebu and the positive response they are getting.

Sy said SM Seaside City will be the fourth largest SM mall in the country, having a gross floor area of 470,000 square meters. SM’s biggest malls are SM Megamall (570,000 sqm.), SM North Edsa (540,000 sqm.), and SM Mall of Asia (480,000 sqm.).

The official said there is space for more than 400 tenants and that 50 percent have already signed up. Names of the tenants, however, were not disclosed.

“What I can say that for is half of the tenants, it will be their first time in Cebu,” Sy said, referring to global brands that have already set foot in Metro Manila years ago, but have not yet penetrated Cebu.

Caesars Seeking to Build $1 Billion Casino in Philippines

seeking a license from the Philippine government to build a $1 billion resort in the country, betting on luring gamblers from across 

Chairman Gary Loveman and Steven Tight, president of the Las Vegas-based casino owner’s international development unit, held preliminary talks with Philippine President Benigno Aquino last month in the U.S. to discuss the possibility of building the resort in the Southeast Asian country, Tight said in a phone interview yesterday.

“There’s no major international brand currently in Manila,” he said. “There’s a chance to create something that will drive tourism, that will really put Manila on the regional tourism map.”

The Philippines awarded four licenses in 2008 and 2009 to casino operators owned by billionaires including James Packer, Lawrence Ho and Enrique Razon to build resorts in the 120-hectare (297-acre) Entertainment City, a Las Vegas-style complex designed to compete with Singapore and Macau’s gambling markets. Each Philippine licensee agreed to invest $1 billion over five years. The country’s gaming regulator hasn’t granted any new licenses under Aquino’s term, which started in 2010, said Philippine Amusement & Gaming Chairman Cristino Naguiat, who this week confirmed Aquino’s discussion with Caesars.

Caesars approached the government to seek a license and approval for the lease of the land next to Ninoy Aquino International Airport, about 4.7 kilometers (2.9 miles) from Entertainment City, Tight said.

“We’re in the process of evaluating everything,” Naguiat said when asked if the regulator will give out new licenses. The government may consider raising the investment requirement of new entrants to $1.5 billion, he said. “If we will bring in someone new, there has to be value added,” Naguiat said.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer earlier reported on the talks. President Benigno Aquino, in a forum with reporters, said today the government is reviewing Caesars’ application.

Koreans, Chinese

Caesars is seeking to build a resort with shops, restaurants and an entertainment district that could showcase international performers such as Celine Dion and Elton John, Tight said.

The company hopes the project would complement a casino resort it’s building in South Korea, Tight said. Caesars plans to build a network of casinos in Asia and is also interested in the market in Vietnam, he said.

A Philippine resort would benefit from the increasing number of South Korean travelers to the country as well as tourists from southern China, according to Tight. More than 20 percent of tourists in the Southeast Asian country came from South Korea in the first seven months of the year, according to the tourism department. This was followed by the U.S. which contributed 16 percent of the total, while China ranked third with 9 percent.

Caesars is working with a local company on a possible casino project and is seeking a “large scale” domestic partner for the resort, Tight said.

Entertainment City will have four casinos including Solaire Resort & Casino by Razon’s Bloomberry Resorts Corp. (BLOOM) City of Dreams Manila, a venture owned by Melco Crown Entertainment Ltd. and Philippine billionaire Henry Sy, is slated to open by this year.

The two remaining licenses are held by an affiliate of Kazuo Okada’s Universal Entertainment Corp. and a venture of Genting Hong Kong Ltd. and Philippine billionaire Andrew Tan. If Okada’s group doesn’t complete its casino project by March, it may forfeit its performance bond of 100 million pesos ($2.2 million) to the Philippine gaming agency, Naguiat said.

intensify and widen attacks, officials of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reportedly said that ISIS is now training its cadre to fly fighter jets.

“They (Islamic State group) have trainers, Iraqi officers who were pilots before for Saddam Hussein,” Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the United Kingdom-based Observatory told Reuters, adding that the militant group is training its members to fly three fighter jets, reportedly captured from the Syrian military.

Rahman told Reuters that locals living in the region have reported seeing the planes take off from the al-Jarrah military airport east of the Syrian city of Aleppo. “They went up many times from the airport and they are flying in the skies outside the airport and coming back,” he reportedly said.

As of now, it is not clear whether the planes, which witnesses identified as MiG 21 or MiG 23 models, are equipped with weaponry, Reuters reported.

If confirmed, this would be the first instance where the Islamic State group, which is facing continuous airstrikes from a United States-led coalition, has taken to the air.

Meanwhile, coalition airstrikes in and around the Syrian border town of Kobani have helped Kurdish fighters push back militants of the Islamic State group, according to media reports. A Kurdish commander told BBC that ISIS had been driven out from most of the town and that it would be “liberated soon.”

In a statement released Thursday, the Observatory said that more than 650 people, including nearly 400 fighters of the Islamic State group, have been killed in Kobani in the last one month, adding that the actual death toll could be at least twice the number.

Agustin, who was among ‎the FHM 100 Sexiest Women in the World in 2013, however, did not make clear in her post what “EA” stood for. 
This further aroused speculation among netizens who claimed “EA” meant “Extrang Asawa”, suggesting that Agustin is the police official’s ‎mistress. ‎As of posting, the photo has been taken down as Agustin’s Facebook account was deactivated. When sought for comment, newly-appointed PNP spokesperson ‎Senior Superintendent Wilben Mayor said Ignacio is currently abroad and will air his side when he comes back.

Viral video of student singing "Through the Fire" in Davao City

DAVAO CITY - A student in Davao City is making waves in social media after her rendition of the Chaka Khan classic "Through The Fire" went viral on YouTube.

The video shows the schoolgirl, identified as San Pedro College student Jade Hipe, still in uniform singing the David Foster-hit at a mall in Davao City.

As of posting, the video titled "Pinay Videoke Talent" has been viewed 390,532 times, has received 35,000 likes and gotten 3,000 shares on Facebook.

In an interview, Hipe said she did not know that the video would go viral, saying she did it on a lark.

"Katuwaan lang. Pag wala akong class, pumupunta talaga ako sa mall at kumakanta doon sa area na may Magic Sing," she said in an interview.

Her teachers said Hipe is also getting good grades in school.

US Marines testing Ultra Heavy Lift Amphibious Connector UHAC at RIMPAC 2014

It's a new U.S. Marine Corps vehicle for getting stuff like troops, tanks and trucks from ships to shore and back.
 
The Corps showed off a prototype of its Ultra Heavy-lift Amphibious Connector (UHAC) last

week during Rim of the Pacific exercises in Hawaii, running it from the Navy's amphibious dock landing ship USS Rushmore to the beaches of Marine Corps Training Area Bellows on Oahu.

"Showcasing the UHAC during RIMPAC is a big deal," Dave George of the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab, which developed the UHAC with funding from the Office of Naval Research, said in a press release. "This is a great way to let people know that this new technology is being developed."

Here's how the UHAC works: The tracks, which are made of what the Marines call "captured-air foam blocks," extend like flippers to propel the craft through the water. When it hits the beach, the foam flattens to become like the tracks on a tank or a bulldozer, only much softer, according to a report from Stars and Stripes.
Last week, the UHAC prototype, which is about half the size of envisioned production models, carried an assault vehicle from the Rushmore to the beach. The Marine Corps says a full-size UHAC would be able to carry much more.
 

"The full-scale model should be able to carry at least three tanks and a HMMVW (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle)," 

Gunnery Sgt. Joseph Perera, the Warfighting Lab's Infantry Weapons Project officer, said in a statement. That's about three times the load that the Corps' current craft assigned to the task, called a Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC), can handle.

It also will be able to surmount bigger obstacles. While an LCAC can only get over a 4-foot-high sea wall, a full-size UHAC will be able to get over sea walls as high as 10, 12 or even 16 feet, according to the Corps.
 
The UHAC prototype type is not armored or armed, but Perera said production models would have armor plating and a .50-caliber machine guns for protection.
They also would be much faster. The prototype could only go 5 mph on the water, but a full-size UHAC should do 25 mph, Gen. Kevin Killea, commander of the Corps' Warfighting Lab, told Stars and Stripes.
 
The UHAC prototype used last week is the third in the program, built upon a concept originally proposed by the Hawaii-based shipbuilding and research firm Navatek, Ltd.

"There has been a one-fifth scale model, then a one-quarter scale model and this is a half-scale model, so we have been progressing,"

Frank Leban, program officer at the Office of Naval Research, said in a statement. "Every vehicle has incorporated more features and technology to help get us to the full scale."

There's no word yet on when the full-scale model may actually come, but officials were happy with last week's demonstration.

"This is a great way to show what it can do," said George. "Today went quite well."

​Airline pilot treats trapped passengers to pizza

A US pilot ordered pizzas for a plane full of passengers as they were stuck on the tarmac for two hours in Wyoming.

Gerhard Bradner ordered 50 pizzas after his plane was diverted to Cheyenne and they waited for thunder and lightning to clear in Denver.

Passengers said the entire cabin burst into applause after the pilot announced the delivery on the loudspeaker.

The Washington DC to Denver Frontier Airlines flight, with 160 people on board, finally flew on to Colorado.

Mr Bradner told Phil Williams on BBC Radio 5 live that half the pizzas were cheese and the other half pepperoni.

The captain paid for it out of his own pocket - but he has now been telephoned by the airline's president who has said that he will reimburse him for the cost.

Mr Bradner said he wasn't a hero - he just wanted to make sure that his passengers left the flight with "a smile on their face",

NASCAR 2014 schedule is not expecting NBC to begin transmitting Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series races in 2014 nascar schedule, the sanctioning physical body announced Wednesday.
