West Valley Fault Earthquake Threatens Metro Manila

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on Wednesday said the Marikina West Valley fault line, one of the active faults in the country, is ripe for movement because it has not moved for 200 years.
Phivolcs said the possibility of a Magnitude 7.2 earthquake is not far-fetched.
A Metro Manila Earthquake Impact Reduction Study earlier revealed that 7 out of 17 cities in Metro Manila will suffer the most damage and casualties if a massive earthquake occurs at the West Valley fault.
The 7 cities are Marikina, Quezon, Pasig, Makati, Pateros, Taguig and Muntinlupa.

Costa Rica vs. Greece: Final score 1-1 (5-3), 10-man Ticos win on penalties

Despite being reduced to 10 men for the last third of the game, Costa Rica clinched a win over Greece to record their best ever performance in a World Cup.
The Ticos have been on a fairytale run ever since topping Group D -- a so-called "Group of Death" -- and will now be contesting a World Cup quarterfinal thanks to Bryan Ruiz, who scored the decisive goal. Oscar Duarte saw himself sent off shortly afterwards, and Greece eventually found a breakthrough in the first minute of injury time when Sokratis Papastathopoulos scored to force extra time. But Costa Rica held on, and a heroic performance from Keylor Navas helped them after he produced a superb save to send the Ticos to a victory in the shootout.
The first half was mostly a cagey affair with both sides looking to play on the counter-attack, although there were a limited amount of chances. A decent move saw Ruiz feed Christian Bolanos early on, but the midfielder blazed his shot over the bar when well-placed to test the goalkeeper.
It was Greece who came the closest to scoring in the first half with José Holebas delivering a sensational cross from deep for Dimitris Salpingidis. Although the forward's cushioned volley was true, he still failed to score as Keylor Navas managed to keep it out with his trailing leg, another stunning save for a hugely impressive tournament for the Ticos keeper.

Yet less than 10 minutes into the second half, Costa Rica found their opener. Bolanos found Ruiz in space in the area, and the forward finished with a deliciously calm shot which took advantage of Karnezis' poor field of vision, calmly rolling the ball past him and into the corner of the net to give his country one foot in their first ever World Cup quarterfinal.
Costa Rica were looking on top, but the game was to take a further twist as Duarte foolishly went in with a late challenge on Holebas to earn himself a second yellow card and leave the Ticos with 30 minutes to hang on with a numerical disadvantage.
Greece poured forward with little to lose, but Costa Rica were holding out well enough. Georgios Samaras produced one archetypal piece of skill to unlock the Ticos' defence, falling over as he stumbled into putting a good ball into the box, but Navas was able to get it away.
Greece's terminal lack of creativity looked like it was going to cost them, yet another late goal was to come just as the game looked lost. Theofanis Gekas ought to have scored with his effort on goal and was denied by another huge save from Navas, but Papastathopoulos was waiting to prod home the rebound and prompt extra time.
Costa Rica were looking all but beaten due to exhaustion as the next 30 minutes began, but Gekas missed another fine chance after a good cross from Vasilis Torosidis. At the second half of extra time, the Ticos somehow managed to find some energy to briefly rally and create a few half-chances, with Brenes and Campbell both having decent opportunities.
Costa Rica came close from a corner but somehow contrived to allow Greece to spring a 5-on-2 counter-attack, yet when the shot eventually came from Mitroglou it was kept out by Navas, who produced another fine save to keep his team in the game. Despite the extreme fatigue of the players, the final 10 minutes were an end-to-end affair of chances at both ends, none greater than when Mitroglou collected a flick-on only for Navas, who flew out of his goal, to deny him.
It was left to penalties to separate the two sides -- Celso Borges smashed home the opening penalty before Mitroglou belied his earlier misses by confidently slotting one home. Ruiz and Christodoulopoulos both also converted in a display of excellent penalty-taking before Gonzalez and Holebas also scored. The exhausted Campbell then stepped up and managed to put his away.
Next to step up was the veteran Gekas, but Navas produced maybe the best moment of his superb tournament so far to thrust out a hand and deflect it away. Michael Umana then confidently dispatched his to complete the historic night for the tiny Central American nation.
Costa Rica: Navas; Gonzalez, Duarte (sent off 66'), Gamboa (Acosta 77'), Umaña, Diaz; Borges, Bolanos (Brenes 83'), Tejeda (Cubero 66'); Ruiz; Campbell
Goals: Ruiz (52')
Greece: Karnezis, Holebas, Manolas, Papastathopoulos, Torosidis; Karagounis, Maniatis (Katsouranis 78'), Samaris (Mitroglou 58'), Salpingidis (Gekas 69'),  Christodoulopoulos, Samaras
Goals: Papastathopoulos (90+1')

Costa Rica took the lead against Greece then saw themselves reduced to 10 men, with Greece equalising in the last minute. But the Ticos held on to clinch a win on penalties thanks to the heroics of Keylor Navas.

Lakers select (Fil-Am) Jordan Clarkson with 46th pick in 2014 NBA Draft

The Wizards' lone pick in the draft turned into the Lakers' with a trade. Los Angeles took point guard Jordan Clarkson from Missouri. The Los Angeles Lakers have traded with the Washington Wizards for the 46th pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, and they used it to select Jordan Clarkson, a point guard out of Missouri. The Wizards reportedly sold the pick to the Lakers despite not having another pick in this draft. Clarkson should be able to help the Lakers, who are light on depth and took a forward, Julius Randle, in the lottery. Clarkson, 22, is one of the older players in the draft after three seasons in Columbia. He averaged 17.1 points and 3.4 assists per game for the Wildcats. His strengths are his athleticism and size, and he fits a type that Mitch Kupchak certainly has liked in the past. Steve Nash's future is unclear and Jordan Farmar is a free agent. Clarkson will be expected to play in the Las Vegas Summer League in July, and the Lakers faithful will hope to see a spark.

North Korea fires more short-range missiles

North Korea on Sunday fired two ballistic missiles into the sea, Seoul's military said, the latest in a series of launches staged in an apparent show of force ahead of a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to the South.
The North fired the missiles into the East Sea (Sea of Japan) from the country's east coast Sunday morning, a defense ministry official told AFP.
"Both landed in international waters beyond its sea border," the official said.
He did not elaborate on the type of the missile. But Yonhap news agency, citing a military official, said they were short-range Scud missiles with a range of about 500 kilometers (300 miles).
In Tokyo, Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera also told reporters that North Korea had launched a number of ballistic missiles.
He added that the Japanese government had lodged a protest with Pyongyang through its embassy in Beijing.
The launch came three days after Pyongyang fired what were believed to be three short-range missiles into the sea on Thursday.
The North did not officially confirm Thursday's launch, revealed by Seoul's military. But a day later, the state-run Korean Central News Agency hailed what it called the successful test of "cutting-edge" and high-precision missiles, watched by leader Kim Jong-Un.
- 'Warning message' from North -
The launches come only days ahead of Xi's state visit to Seoul to discuss issues including the North's disputed nuclear weapons programs.
The July 3-4 trip -- Xi's first presidential journey to the Korean peninsula -- also marks the first time in almost two decades for a sitting Chinese leader to visit the South before having been to the North.
China is the isolated North's sole major ally and major economic lifeline that offers precious fuel and food to its wayward ally.
But ties have been tested by the North's pursuit of nuclear programs in defiance of pressure from the international community including Beijing.
The North staged its third atomic test -- its most powerful so far -- in February 2013, triggering new sanctions and condemnation by UN Security Council members including China.
The latest missile launches were aimed at increasing pressure on Xi and South Korean President Park Geun-Hye ahead of their talks, said Shin In-Kyun, head of Korea Defense Network, a Seoul-based think tank.
"The two leaders will inevitably discuss how to curb the North's nuclear ambition and how to punish Pyongyang if it pushes ahead with the weapons programmed," Shin said.
"And the North is sending a message of warning in advance, to prevent the leaders from criticizing Pyongyang too harshly," he said.
Seoul and Washington have persistently called on Beijing to exert more pressure on the North to abandon its atomic weapons programmed.
But despite China's growing frustration with the North, it fears the instability -- and flood of refugees -- that a collapse of the regime would bring.
The North has often launched short-range missiles or rockets to express anger at perceived provocations, including military drills held south of border.
In March, it conducted multiple launches of Scud missiles and rockets to coincide with annual joint army drills between Seoul and Washington.
The North also test-fired two medium-range ballistic missiles that flew 650 kilometers off its east coast, prompting a stern reaction from Washington and Seoul.
South Korea had condemned the missile launches as a "reckless provocation" but stopped short of calling for UN sanctions.

Nigerian Singer Offers Virginity in Exchange for Abducted Girls

Haven't heard of Adokiye Kyrian? Well, soon you will have. Either because she's a rising Nigerian pop star who looks like this:
Nigerian pop singer Adokiye

Or because she's a virgin.
In a recent interview with Showtime, 23-year-old Adokiye surprised everyone by confessing that she's a virgin.
What's more, she said she would give up her virginity in return for the release of the more than 200 girls Boko Haram kidnapped in mid-April.
“This is 11 p.m. in the night and do you know what I am thinking about? Those little girls, where they are and what could be happening to them. It is just unfair. They are too young. I wish I could offer myself in exchange,” she told Showtime.
“They are between 12 and 15 year old girls for Christ sake. I am older and more experienced. Even if 10 to 12 men have to take me every night, I don’t care. Just release these girls and let them go back to their parents.”
Of course she also said, in the same interview, that anyone who would like to deflower her must be prepared to buy her mother a private jet. But hey.
Let's face it: when it comes to Boko Haram extreme measures are needed.
It's been three months since the terrorist group snatched those girls and still nothing. Media attention has died down but Boko Haram hasn't. Yesterday, 60 more women and girls were reported kidnapped in northeast Nigeria.

Japan 1-4 Colombia

Colombia finished Group C with three wins from three as Jackson Martinez scored twice to seal a 4-1 win over Japan on Tuesday.

Jose Pekerman's side, so impressive in securing wins over Greece and Cote d'Ivoire earlier in the tournament, were already assured of qualification and knew a draw would be enough to secure their passage as group winners.

Japan, meanwhile, needed to win and hope the result between Cote d'Ivoire and Greece went their way in order to progress.

The South Americans hit the front shortly after the quarter-hour mark, Juan Cuadrado smashing home a penalty after Yasuyuki Konno had fouled Adrian Ramos.

Japan equalised on the stroke of half-time, Shinji Okazaki squeezing a header inside the near post to raise hopes of qualifying.

Yet Colombia then pulled clear in the second half, Jackson Martinez scoring twice following assists from half-time substitute James Rodriguez, who added a delightful late fourth.

Colombia will now take on Uruguay in the second round, while Japan exit the tournament having finished bottom of their group.

Japan made the stronger start as Colombia struggled to find their feet having made eight changes from their victory over Cote d'Ivoire.

However, it was the South Americans who went in front after 17 minutes, following their first real foray forward.

Konno needlessly brought down Ramos inside the area, and Cuadrado dispatched the spot-kick, prompting further choreographed celebrations from the Colombians.

Japan responded well, Shinji Kagawa creating space on the edge of the box before firing in a low shot which was tipped behind by David Ospina.

Keisuke Honda was the next man to go close, sending a dipping free kick narrowly wide of the right-hand post in the 33rd minute. Colombia ought to have doubled their lead three minutes before the interval, Martinez firing wide of the target from 14 yards after being picked out by Ramos.

They were made to rue that miss soon afterwards, with Okazaki flicking home Honda's right-wing cross with the final touch of the half.

Half-time substitute Carlos Carbonero wasted a golden chance to restore Colombia's advantage in the 54th minute, stabbing the ball over the crossbar after a devilish ball in from fellow replacement James.

It mattered little as Martinez made it 2-1 a minute later, taking a touch and firing low beyond Eiji Kawashima after a nicely-weighted pass from James inside the area.

Eder Alvarez Balanta was perhaps lucky to escape punishment after his forearm struck the face of Okazaki in the corner, drawing blood from the nose of the Japan goalscorer.

Honda continued to pose a threat from set-pieces, bringing a save out of Ospina with a rasping free kick in the 64th minute.

Yoshito Okubo went close a minute later, meeting Atsuto Uchida's low cross at pace only to see his close-range effort fly over the bar.

Martinez doubled his tally eight minutes from time with a cool finish, and moments later Kagawa summed up a disappointing campaign for the Japanese by firing wide with just Ospina to beat from close range.

There was a notable moment five minutes before the end, as 43-year-old goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon - retiring after the tournament - was brought on in place of Ospina to become the oldest player in World Cup history. James, one of the players of the tournament so far, showed his class in the 90th minute to round off the scoring, turning Maya Yoshida inside out and dinking an impudent finish over Kawashima, before Mondragon made an injury-time save to deny Yoichiro Kakitani.

'Hot felon' mug shot goes viral

Female Facebookers are swooning over a dreamy-eyed stranger. There's only one problem—he's behind bars. 30-year-old Jeremy Meeks' mugshot went viral Thursday, racking up thousands of likes and comments in less than 24 hours on the social media site. Meeks, a convicted felon, was arrested Wednesday on five weapons charges and one gang charge, according to Officer Joseph Silva, a spokesman for the Stockton Police Department. Silva declined to say what Meeks was previously convicted of, saying the department does not routinely release information about a suspect's criminal history.
'Hot felon' mugshot goes viral
No previous arrest photo has garnered so much positive attention since the department set up the Facebook page in March 2012, Silva told The Associated Press. "I have not seen that many likes for a photo before," he said. Some comments read: "OMG he's waaaay too sexy to go in a cell—bring him to me, I'll lock him up," and "being that sexy is obviously illegal." Or maybe the illegal part could be that Meeks is a repeat offender in California, currently charged with felony terrorism and weapons charges. He's also married and a father. But none of that is rattling his admirers. One person even offered to donate money to bail him out. Meeks was one of four men taken into custody during Operation Ceasefire, a multiagency mission to curb a recent increase in shootings and robberies in the Weston Ranch area of Stockton, a Northern California city of about 300,000 nestled amid the network of waterways that form the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta. Four firearms were confiscated during a sweep Wednesday involving the Stockton police gang unit, the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Task Force and other agencies. Silva called Meeks "one of the most violent criminals in the Stockton area." Meeks's bail was raised from $900,000 to $1 million at his arraignment Friday afternoon, according to the Stockton P.D. Facebook page.

5 Photos that will make you in love with foxes

Fox is a common name for many species of alert omnivorous mammals belonging to the Canidae family. Foxes are small-to-medium-size canids (slightly smaller than a medium-size domestic dog), with a flattened skull, upright triangular ears, a pointed, slightly upturned snout, and a long bushy tail (or brush). Members of about 37 species are referred to as foxes, of which only 12 species actually belong to the Vulpes genus of "true foxes". By far the most common and widespread species of fox is the red fox (Vulpes vulpes), although various species are found on almost every continent. The presence of fox-like carnivores all over the globe, together with their widespread reputation for cunning, has contributed to their appearance in popular culture and folklore in many societies around the world (see also Foxes in culture). The hunting of foxes with packs of hounds, long an established pursuit in Europe, especially the British Isles, was exported by European settlers to various parts of the New World. From: Wikipedia

Isaiah Austin's NBA dreams end with Marfan syndrome diagnosis

A little info. about Marfan Syndrome.
Marfan syndrome (also called Marfan's syndrome) is a genetic disorder caused by the misfolding of the protein fibrillin-1. Fibrillin-1 is coded by the gene FBN1.[1][2] People with Marfan tend to be unusually tall, with long limbs and long, thin fingers. It is named after Antoine Marfan,[3] the French pediatrician who first described the condition in 1896.[4][5] The gene linked to the disease was first identified by Hal Dietz[6][7] and Francesco Ramirez in 1991.[8] From Wikipedia.

Isaiah Austin has been diagnosed with Marfan syndrome, ending his predraft process and the potential for an NBA career, Baylor announced on Sunday.
"This is devastating news, but Isaiah has the best support system anyone could ask for, and he knows that all of Baylor Nation is behind him,"Baylor coach Scott Drew said. "His health is the most important thing, and while it's extremely sad that he won't be able to play in the NBA, our hope is that he'll return to Baylor to complete his degree and serve as a coach in our program."
                                                            (c) Image by: RantSports

Marfan syndrome is caused by a genetic mutation that results in a connective tissue problems throughout the body. The Baylor website lists an enlarged aorta as one result of Marfan syndrome, a problem that can be life-threatening. Austin, who suffered a detached retina that left him partially blind, has played with a prosthetic right eye during the course of his basketball career. He revealed this fact during his sophomore season. Even through that adversity, Austin averaged 12.1 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.4 blocks in 73 games over two years. Austin made the decision to forgo the remainder of his college career in April, five days before the early-entry deadline. Austin considered the jump to the NBA as a freshman, but was not capable of going through the predraft process because of a torn labrum. The news of this final career-ending health issue comes with fewer than five days to spare before the 2014 NBA Draft, no doubt a day Austin had looked forward to as a top high school prospect and stand out college player.

Police answered a 911 call from the Kirkland, Wash., home Solo shares with her husband Jerramy Stevens and arrested her for allegedly striking her sister and teenage nephew. Solo, according to police, appeared “intoxicated and upset” and her nephew, 17, and adult sister had visible injuries. “There was a big party going on at her house. It was an out-of-control situation,” Kirkland police Lt. Mike Murray told the Seattle Times. Solo, 32, was being held without bail in South King County Jail on two charges of domestic violence assault in the fourth degree. Listed under her married name, Hope Amelia Stevens, she is to appear Monday in Kirkland Municipal Court. Solo married Stevens, a former NFL player for the Seattle Seahawks and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, in November 2012, shortly after he was arrested on suspicion of assaulting Solo, but charges were never brought because there was insufficient evidence. Solo, who has played on two Olympic gold-medal winning teams, appeared as a contestant on ABC television’s “Dancing with the Stars” in 2011. Kirkland police released details of her arrest (via the Times): On June 21st 2014 and just before 1:00 am, Kirkland Police Department Patrol Units responded to a 911 call of a disturbance in the 10600 block of 124th AVE NE. The male caller stated that a female at the residence was “hitting people” and they could not get her to stop or to leave the house. Officer arrived and immediately heard the sounds of the disturbance inside the residence. They entered and contacted several persons; one being Hope A Stevens (Solo) who appeared intoxicated and upset. As officers made contact, they observed visible injuries on Solo’s 17-year-old nephew and on Solo’s sister. After receiving statements of the persons involved, Officers determined that Solo was the primary aggressor and had instigated the assault. Solo was arrested on 2 counts of Domestic Violence Assault 4th Degree and booked into the south King County detention facility (SCORE). Solo will have a mandatory court appearance Monday June 23rd at the Kirkland Municipal Court, with the time yet to be determined. The Seattle Reign, for whom Solo plays, said in a statement: “We are aware of the situation regarding Hope Solo and are currently gathering information. We have no further comments at this time.”

Honduras VS Ecuador

Ecuador and Honduras have both qualified for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Honduras qualified with a third place finish in the CONCACAF fourth round. Ecuador qualified with a fourth place finish in the CONMEBOL round robin qualifying. Honduras played another CONMEBOL team a few days ago, Brazil, and were blown out 5-0. As they try to gain some invaluable experience for the World Cup, they’ll look for a better result against a team outside of their conference. “The 5-0 score (against Honduras) did not reflect reality,” Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said, via ESPN FC. “It was a well-contested game and it could have been 2-0 or 3-0.” Scolari and his Brazilian squad were feeling confident after the win. “Brazil will be champions,” he said. “If I didn’t believe we could win the World Cup, I would not coach the team. I would be sitting at home.”

Top 5 World's Cleanest Country 2014

The declining health of Mother Earth has drawn growing attention over the last two decades, with countries coming together to fight a range of environmental threats, from declining fishing stocks to global warming.
Witness the Kyoto Protocol, the first widely adopted set of environmental protection guidelines, which emerged during the 1990s and took effect in 2005. Kyoto led to the development of the first large-scale emissions trading market, Europe’s Greenhouse Gas Emission Trading Scheme, which puts caps on carbon dioxide pollution. A similar carbon market, the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, began operating at the start of this year in 10 Eastern U.S. states.
In spite of nearly universal support for a cleaner globe (the U.S. was one of only a few countries that failed to adopt Kyoto), it’s mainly the rich nations that enjoy pristine environments, according to the Environmental Performance Index (EPI). Columbia University’s Center for International Earth Science Information Network and Yale University’s Center for Environmental Law and Policy developed the index to highlight the cleanest countries, and give laggards the opportunity to benchmark efforts to improve their own environments and the health of their citizens.
Day by day, the world is being polluted by carbon extracts from vehicles and industries. Due to pollution, the world is being subjected to green house effect and becoming fatal to human life. However, still some countries managed to reduce the pollution and keep their county safe and less vulnerable to filthy atmosphere. These countries were able to achieve this cleanness through the discipline of the people. Nevertheless, the cleanness of the country places a vital role in the best country to live in the world. The cleanness of the country denotes the maturity of the people towards pollution. The top 10 cleanest countries in the world 2014 list is accumulated by countries, which is based on pollution rate, sanitation, habitat protection, carbon emission, forest protection, Environment performance index 2014 etc.
