Algieri makes weight for Pacquiao on 2nd try

MACAU -- Chris Algieri needed about 50 minutes to make weight Friday (Saturday in China) for his WBO welterweight title fight with Manny Pacquiao at Cotai Arena.
Algieri, the unbeaten WBO junior welterweight champion, weighed 144.4 when he first stepped on his scale. After stripping naked and removing a large chain, he still weighed 144.2. At that point, he had two hours to make the weight.
Algieri said he successfully made weight Thursday night in the room of a Top Rank employee.
"Maybe something happened when the scale [got] moved here," said Algieri, who has a master's in clinical nutrition.
Pacquiao weighed 143.8 pounds, making the contract limit of 144 easily on the first try.
"I'm disappointed," Pacquiao said after he was asked about Algieri's weight. He also said that Algieri looked dehydrated when they did the staredown.
Algieri ate a breakfast of oatmeal, eggs and coffee before heading to the arena for the weigh-in.
"I'd rather be well fed and feel good than sucked out and drawn," he said.
Algieri trainer Tim Lane said Algieri did not work out to make the weight and simply used the bathroom.
He said he thought there might have been a quarter pound variance on the scale.
"We have two scales upstairs and one of them said he was 143 on the dime and another said he was 143.8," Lane said. "We thought we were where we needed to be. But he had to go to the bathroom and he kind of held onto that. He's fine. ... He just had to go to the bathroom. No exercise. That was it."
When he came back to weigh in, Algieri was 143.6 on the first try. There is no fine for missing on the first attempt.
Justin Fortune, Pacquiao's strength and conditioning coach, laughed at the irony of Algieri, who has a degree in nutrition, being the one who missed weight.
"I don't have a degree but my guy made it with no problem," Fortune said, grinning.
Roach told Yahoo Sports before the weigh-in that Pacquiao weighed 143.1 last night after dinner and said he expected his fighter to come in between 143.4 and 143.8, which is exactly what happened.
That, though, didn't bother Lane.
"Pacquiao's a 126-pounder, dude," Lane said. "Of course. Pacquiao should never be at this weight. The guy walks around at probably 142. He probably ate a hamburger just before the weigh-in just to get the weight up. I'm sure he made it [easily]."

"My Dad's a coward" - Floyd Mayweather Jr. Son

It isn't a word usually associated with an undefeated professional boxer who has won championship
titles across five weight divisions. But for a son who was a witness to his father's beating of his mother four years ago, "coward" is an apt term to describe Floyd Mayweather Jr.

In an article published on USA Today, Koraun Mayweather, the fighter's eldest son with former partner Josie Harris, recalls the night his mother was attacked by the boxer in 2010.

"(My dad) said to lock my door and stay in my room," said Koraun, who is now 15 years old. "I sat there and thought about what I was going to do next. Just for like a minute."

Harris was asleep when Mayweather arrived with an associate, James McNair, at around 4 a.m. The boxer, agitated by the fact that his former partner was dating another man, beat her in front of their then 11-year-old son.

"I ran and I tried to go through the front door to go to the (security) gate," Koraun said of his actions during that night. "But then his friend (McNair) came through the door and blocked off the stairway for me to go through."

The boy then went back to his room, locked the door, and got out of the house through his bathroom to call for help.

"I just told (the guard) that my mom was getting hurt and to call the ambulance and the police," he said.

Four years later, Koraun is still seeing his father every once in while. Mayweather recently gifted him a golf cart for his birthday, but the boy said he is still coming to terms with what his father did, especially with the boxer's continuous denial.

"He is a coward," he said.

After everything he had seen, Koraun, now 15 years old, has no plans of taking after his father's footsteps in the boxing world.

"I find (boxing) boring. It is just like how people sit in the ring and fight for 12 rounds and it gets boring after a while," he said. "Sometimes they run."

Gov't employees to get 13th month pay starting this week

Manila Philippines - Government employees will get the remaining half of their 13th month pay and cash gift starting this
week, the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) announced Sunday.
Under Budget Circular 2010-1, which was first issued on August 28, 2010, government personnel are entitled to a year-end bonus equivalent to a month's pay, as well as a cash gift of P5,000.
"For the past year, government employees have been working quietly and without fanfare for the good of the nation. It's only proper that their efforts and hard work are given fair recognition. The year-end bonus and extra cash should help them prepare for the holiday season and its demands," said Budget Secretary Florencio "Butch" Abad.
Government-owned or -controlled corporations (GOCCs) and government financial institutions (GFIs) will tap into their corporate funds for the bonuses, while local government units (LGUs) will source their perks from local government funds.
The budget circular covers civilian and uniformed personnel across all government departments and agencies. It also includes regular co-terminus government employees.
Abad noted that the budget for the 13th month pay was already released at the very start of the year as part of the General Appropriations Act.
"The General Appropriations Act-as-release-document ensures that funds are sufficiently available to the agencies from the very start, so that they can roll out the year-end bonuses and cash gifts at the appropriate time," he said.
Government employees already received half of their 13th month pay and cash gift last May.

Badass Porcupine Fights Off Pride Of 17 Lions In South Africa

Who's the king of the jungle now?

Footage posted on YouTube last week shows a pride of 17 lions surrounding a single porcupine at the Londolozi Game Reserve, a private reserve bordering Kruger National Park in South Africa.
"This is not an ideal place to be, especially if you feature on the menu of a lion!" Lucien Beaumont, who captured the footage, wrote on the reserve's blog.
But, as it turns out, the porcupine wasn't planning on becoming dinner that night. Beaumont wrote:
"The porcupine began to run backwards into any lion that would come too close for comfort, a common defense mechanism for a threatened porcupine. If the porcupine manages to get close enough to a predator, it does not shoot its quills as many people may think. Rather the quills have micro-barbs, which hook into the face or paws of a predator that may get too close. The quills simply pull out of the porcupines skin without causing damage to the prickly creature. The predator then has to deal with a painful quill."
The lions eventually gave up and disappeared into the night.

Here’s Why Steve Jobs Didn’t Let His Kids Use iPads and Why You Shouldn’t Either

If you fall within the Gen-Y era like us, chances are you’ve given a bunch of thought as to how you would raise your own children in this day and age (assuming you don’t have children already). Especially with technology, so much has changed since our childhoods in the 90s. Here’s one question: Would you introduce the technological wonder/heroin that is the iPod and iPad to your kids?

Steve Jobs wouldn’t, and for good reason too.

In a Sunday article, New York Times reporter Nick Bilton said he once assumingly asked Jobs, “So your kids must love the iPad?”

Jobs responded:

“They haven’t used it. We limit how much technology our kids use at home.”
Especially in Silicon Valley, there is actually a trend of tech execs and engineers who shield their kids from technology. They even send their kids to non-tech schools like the Waldorf School in Los Altos, where computers aren’t found anywhere because they only focus on hands-on learning.

There is a quote that was highlighted in The Times by Chris Anderson, CEO of 3D Robotics and a father of five. He explains what drives those who work in tech to keep it from their kids.

“My kids accuse me and my wife of being fascists and overly concerned about tech, and they say that none of their friends have the same rules…  That’s because we have seen the dangers of technology firsthand. I’ve seen it in myself, I don’t want to see that happen to my kids.”

If our current addictions to our iPhones and other tech is any indication, we may be setting up our children for incomplete, handicapped lives devoid of imagination, creativity and wonder when we hook them onto technology at an early age. We were the last generation to play outside precisely because we didn’t have smartphones and laptops. We learned from movement, hands-on interaction, and we absorbed information through books and socialization with other humans as opposed to a Google search.

Learning in different ways has helped us become more well-rounded individuals — so, should we be more worried that we are robbing our children of the ability to Snapchat and play “Candy Crush” all day if we don’t hand them a smartphone, or should we more worried that we would be robbing them of a healthier, less dependent development if we do hand them a smartphone? I think Steve Jobs had it right in regard to his kids.

So the next time you think about how you will raise your kids, you may want to (highly) consider not giving them whatever fancy tech we’ll have while they are growing up. Play outside with them and surround them with nature; they might hate you, but they will absolutely thank you for it later, because I’m willing to bet that’s exactly how many of us feel about it now that we are older.

A “Speechless” Romantic Love Affair.

As we all know, there are lots of love stories in the world that started out from a myriad of incidents or situations, a simple greeting or just an eye contact and so much more. You name it. This is quite a romantic story that don’t normally happen everyday.

Who would expect that a beautiful romantic relationship could happen in a diner, and in an awkward way like what happened to Laura.

Laura, a diner crew, loves to write and sing songs. She would always sing in front of their customers, kind of like entertaining them while dining. Something happened that changed the course of her life, her love life at least. One night, as she sang, a guy comes in to eat. He would go there every now and then to have dinner. Laura obviously had feelings for him the moment she first saw him, but she noticed that no matter how good she sang the guy didn’t even look or just listen.

The familiar scene would take place more than a couple of times, but destiny came in shimmering, as if it’s telling them that something good was going to happen. A person whom everybody despised, but she showed goodness to, was the one who gave her the key to her lasting happiness, because all those occasions that the guy would eat there, nobody knew that he was mute. He was not able to hear what she sang. That was it. The book that she got from the homeless man helped her a lot to meet the man that she had feelings for. And that was the beginning of a romantic love affair. Little did we know that the homeless man who gave her the book about sign language was Cupid after all.

Astonishing Hot BABE Challenges NISSAN GT-R On A DUEL.

“Top Gear” always likes to give answers on important social issues. This time Jeremy Clarkson, the host of the most popular car show in the world, arranged for a unique race at the Top Gear Festival in Sydney. Jeremy wanted to find out who is faster – a woman or a Nissan GT-R. In the role of a woman was the famous Australian hurdler Michelle Jenneke.
Terms of short race came down to the shuttle run. That is Jenneke had to run 50 meters, turn around and come running back to the starting line. The task of Clarkson was that at around 50 meters he had to stop the GT-R, and return driving in reverse. What came of it, see below on the video.
In addition to her achievements, the Australian athlete in the hurdles became known for her ritual – the warm-up before the start, which is a kind of merry dance. It is a pity that it did not help Michelle win Clarkson.
